Career Development Programs

The student-run Vanderbilt Marketing Association (VMA) and the Owen Career Management Center (CMC) currently offer a variety of career development programs aimed to help current students achieve their goals for mastering the requisite marketing insights and skills necessary to obtain top marketing jobs following graduation.  Sample programs are listed below.

PERSONALIZED MOCK INTERVIEWS & RESUME REVIEWS

All first year students are matched with a second year Peer Coach and have ongoing access to a CMC Coach for personal, one-on-one attention in resume reviews, mock interviews, networking advice, and schedule planning. In addition to Peer Coaches, other second year students volunteer to review first years' resumes, practice mock interviews, and provide any additional feedback for a more personalized experience.

Marketing Interview & Case Prep

Each fall, the CMC leads a series of workshops focused on preparing for marketing interviews and marketing case interviews, from the types of questions to expect and how to formulate impactful responses to key frameworks and best practices for prepping outside of standard behavioral and case interviews. Live practice is interwoven into the session, where small groups of first years will have a chance to quickly respond to questions and receive feedback from 2nd years on the spot.

BRAND Management SYMPOSIUM & NETWORKING EVENTS

The Symposium brings 3-4 brand management alums from top CPG companies back to campus to give a comprehensive inside look at what their jobs really entail, how to design a career path within marketing and specifically brand, and how to standout in brand recruiting. Typically in early-mid September, it also provides students on the fence about brand or who may not have considered it with crucial insight.

Network with alumni from top marketing firms as they share their experiences and walk through case studies to educate students about the types of issues that marketers face every day.

OFFICE HOURS

Office Hours are a time for you to interact one-one-one with a company representative! Take 20 minutes to ask all your questions and learn more about why a particular company might be a great fit for you. 

Alumni Mock Interview Event

Each September, marketing alumni return to Owen for an evening of mock interviews. The timing is designed to give students heading to the National Career Fairs practical and honest feedback on their interviewing skills from alums who have been in their shoes and now sit on the other side.

MARKETING 101

New to marketing? No problem! Come and learn more about the basics of marketing, such as the 4P’s and 3C’s, so you can be as prepared as possible for your interviews. This is also a great chance to learn about various marketing opportunities in a breadth of industries.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Every other week, the VMA sends a newsletter to members to keep them informed about the latest headlines and trends within marketing across industries so that they can stay on top of the latest marketing trends as they prepare for networking events.

Experiential opportunities

Sign up for independent study projects, so you can apply what you learn in the classroom to real-life businesses that face these challenges. These are consulting projects that range from market research, marketing strategy, and implementation.

CASE COMPETITIONS

Work in teams of 5-6 students to learn more about marketing and develop strategies for actual business challenges. This is a great way to informally connect with companies and to get to know other students.

SECOND YEAR PANELS

Each fall, returning second years make themselves available to discuss their recently-completed summer internships. These students are a great source of knowledge and candid feedback. 

LUNCH 'N' LEARNS

Lunch 'n' Learns are a wonderful opportunity to informally connect with company representatives. This a great chance to learn about various industries and the opportunities available at those companies.
